New editors of PEGS appointed

At the Council Meeting of 30 October, Susanne Kord and W. Daniel Wilson were appointed editors of PEGS and Honarary Secretaries of the Society, to join Matthew Bell who continues in both roles.

Susanne Kord is Professor and Head of German at UCL. She has published widely on women writers in 18th- and 19th-century Germany, with book-length forays into Film Studies and Comparative Literature. Her most recent book, Murderesses in German Writing, 1720-1860, will appear in June 2009 with CUP. She has received numerous awards, both for her poems and scholarly work. She has edited, co-edited or guest-edited several important journals in the field, including The German Quarterly, The Lessing Yearbook, and German Life and Letters.

W. Daniel Wilson was a member of the German Dept. at Berkeley from 1983 to 2006, when he took up his present position as Professor of German at RHUL. He was elected vice-president of the Goethe Society of North America, and due to become its President in 2007, but resigned on moving to the UK in 2006. Among the works of Goethe on which he has published are Götz von Berlichingen, Werther, Egmont, Iphigenie auf Tauris and the plays written in response to the French Revolution. Since the early 1990s his work has focussed in particular on the politics of the Duchy of Weimar. This work has received considerable attention in the German media, notably his book Das Goethe-Tabu: Protest und Menschenrechte im klassischen Weimar (dtv, 1999). This year he published a document relating to a controversial execution of the infanticide Johanna Höhn, which was reported on in the FAZ and provoked a response there.
